Message from the President

July 16, 2007

We in Powell River are all richer because of our 2007 BC Disability Games experience. Our understanding and appreciation have been enhanced. We feel like we won the BC 49, Super 7 and Lotto 649 all in one week. While there has been a large effect on adults, it is the children, some never exposed to people with disabilities, who so quickly learned the lessons it has taken others years and years to figure out. They see the person. The different ways of walking, using a chair, having a four-legged companion or talking are not their defining characteristics.

The athletes, their attendants and families inspired us over and over again. Our visitors took away more than medals and memories when they returned home. They took away a piece of the hearts of many volunteers and supporters who had met them. They gave us so much more than we gave them.

From the athletes' arrival on Wednesday, July 11, to the Opening Ceremony, all the events, medal ceremonies, the participant activities and finally Sunday, July 15, when they all departed, we were left with stories that we can tell for the rest of our lives. We want to capture those stories that are being told, shared among Games volunteers. We ask people to send in their stories to be included on the website. To be inclusive, audio clips are appreciated if the story involves one of the Blind Sports athletes. We will never forget our Games experience and the wonderful people we have met.
